National Nutrition Month!

As we turn the calendar to March, we begin to feel closure from the confinements of winter. We get that pep back in our step and welcome the fairy land that Spring promises. We also celebrate National Nutrition Month in March. As a Registered Dietitian for 19 years, maybe deep down, this is another reason March is a favorite month of mine.

What comes to mind when you hear the word Nutrition? You may associate Nutrition with nourishing food that is minimally processed from the earth. Nutrition may even equate to health. When I think of Nutrition, I think of Science. It is an ever changing and evolving field in which we have only scratched the surface. Did you know there is growing research supporting a correlation between mental health (such as schizophrenia) and gut microbiome imbalances? Do you know anyone with Alzheimer’s? I commend the Dietitian’s that have the luxury to work in Alzheimer’s research to help develop a cure. What about cancer? We are literally at the tip of the iceberg. The next time you choose food for medicine, you could be changing your DNA to help us crack the code of the field of Nutrition to support medical miracles.

At the end of the day, when we take our Dietitian hat off, we’re just like everyone else. We are all big foodies! Just because we have the word “diet” in our job title, does not mean we promote diets or dieting! We value & embrace the term “anti-diet Dietitian.” Working in the field of Nutrition is an incredibly rewarding, ever changing, and fun field! Thank you for taking time this March to recognize the field of Nutrition, the work of a Registered Dietitian, and to celebrate National Nutrition Month!
